The week ahead: 08/08/22

Germany dominates the earnings this week with figures from Munich Re, Fraport, E.ON, Brenntag, Deutsche Telekom, Siemens, RWE, ThyssenKrupp, Bilfinger, Ceconomy, Deutz and Freenet. We’re also due updates from AIG, News Corp, Emerson and Disney, plus Chinese, German, US and French inflation figures, OPEC’s monthly production report and UK GDP data.

Monday 8 AugustA

While on Sunday China issued trade balance data, and early on Monday Japan’s latest current account was released, in the US this afternoon the Conference Board publishes its employment trends index. Insurance group AIG posts earnings along with energy suppliers Dominion and Oneok, mining company Barrick Gold, food processor Tyson, big data software firm Palantir, video game developer Take-Two, pharma firm Viatris, engineering multinational Aecom and media group News Corp.

Tuesday 9 August

Electrical equipment manufacturer Emerson reports to the market on Tuesday, with Wall Street expecting to see growth in earnings. Figures are also due from food service supplier Sysco, insurance company Munich Re, cybersecurity firm Akamai, car parts manufacturer Continental, fashion company Ralph Lauren, UK financial services firm Legal & General, food ingredient provider Ingredion, insulation supplier SIG, German transport company Fraport and pharma firms Exelixis, Halozyme, Perrigo and Bausch Health. Also look out for the UK BRC retail sales monitor, Australian Westpac consumer sentiment and NAB business confidence, and US nonfarm productivity for the second quarter.

Wednesday 10 August

Entertainment giant Disney leads the earnings on Wednesday, amid rumours that it is set to change the name of its flagship theme park in Florida. Keep an eye out too for results from insurance firms Manulife, Aviva and Prudential, German electric utility E.ON, chemicals company Brenntag, food industry group GEA, security software firm CyberArk, mining company Pan American Silver, US fast-food chains Wendy’s and Jack in the Box, website builder Wix, food by-products recycler Darling Ingredients, cable manufacturer Leoni and UK food delivery company Deliveroo. We’ll also get Chinese, German and US CPI data and the latest US federal budget balance.

Thursday 11 August

DAX components Deutsche Telekom, Siemens and RWE post updates on Thursday, with figures also due from medical equipment maker ResMed, biotech firm Illumina, mining multinational Antofagasta, aircraft leasing company AerCap, German conglomerate ThyssenKrupp, commercial developer Derwent London, theme park operator Six Flags, civil engineering firm Bilfinger, retail group Ceconomy, energy services firm Petrofac and engine maker Deutz. As well as the UK RICS house price balance and US PPI data, expect OPEC’s keenly awaited oil market report at midday (UK time). Last week the US reported an unexpected rise in crude oil inventories of 4.5 million barrels.

Friday 12 August

We’ll get an update on the health of the UK economy on Friday with the revised GDP for Q2 and the monthly estimate, after growth of 0.5% in May, plus June industrial and manufacturing production and trade balance figures. We’ll also see French CPI data, eurozone industrial production and the US import and export price indices. Earnings include German telecoms and web content provider Freenet and fintech firm Broadridge.
